What Is Inflammation?
Inflammation is your body’s way of sounding the alarm when something needs attention. It happens in two primary forms: acute inflammation and chronic inflammation.
When you have an injury or an infection, the body ramps up blood flow to the affected area, allowing immune cells and nutrients to rush in. You may notice redness, warmth, pain, and swelling—all signs of this inflammation at work. While acute inflammation is often a necessary step for healing, the chronic form can become a burden on your health.
Acute Inflammation: Your Body’s First Responder
Acute inflammation is quick, intense, and usually localized. It’s like a loud, blazing fire. Let’s say you get a paper cut; your immune system immediately kicks in, sending white blood cells to fight off bacteria and prevent infection. As a result, the area may become red and swollen. When the wound heals, the inflammation subsides—problem solved! Acute inflammation can last anywhere from hours to a few days, providing immediate and localized protection.
So what does the “good” kind of inflammation do for us anyways? In the short term, inflammation actually helps heal our bodies from injury or illness, for example. When inflammation starts, this triggers the immune system to respond by sending various types of hormones and immune mediators to the questionable site. Our body responds by increasing blood flow to that area (this is what causes that red and hot feeling). That increase in blood flow helps carry more immune cells to the location, and inflammation makes it easier for those immune cells to enter the questionable tissue. Mucous membranes will also start to secrete more fluids, which can help flush out any invaders (like when you have a runny nose during allergy season). However, when inflammation becomes chronic, our health begins to suffer.
Chronic Inflammation: A Slow, Silent Burn
Unlike acute inflammation, chronic inflammation is subtle and can affect the whole body. This type of inflammation is often low-grade and lingers for months or even years, making it much harder to detect. Chronic inflammation has been linked to numerous health conditions, including:
- Skin Disorders: Acne, eczema, and psoriasis
- Autoimmune Diseases: Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis
- Cardiovascular Disease: Heart disease, atherosclerosis, and stroke
